Read moreIf a faucet barely trickles or stops during a Kyle freeze, act as if that pipe is frozen: keep the faucet open, warm the frozen section gently with a hair dryer, heating pad, or towels soaked in warm water — never an open flame — and know where your main shut-off is before anything thaws. A frozen pipe is urgent for one reason: ice expands, and the damage usually shows up as a burst when the pipe thaws, not while it is frozen. Here is the order to do things, plus the prep checklist for the next freeze.

1. Open the affected faucet — a slow drip relieves pressure and lets melting water escape. Open both handles on a two-handle faucet.
2. Find the frozen section. Follow the line from that faucet: exterior-wall runs, garage and attic sections, and pipes near vents feel coldest and frost over first. Frost on the outside of a pipe is a strong clue.
3. Warm it gently, starting closest to the faucet and working back along the frozen run. Hair dryer, heating pad, space heater kept at a safe distance, or warm wet towels. Keep warming until full pressure returns.
4. Check every other faucet in the house the same way — freezes rarely happen in just one place.
5. Know your main shut-off location before thawing finishes. If a pipe has split, you will want the water off in seconds, not minutes — our pipe repair and emergency plumbing pages cover what happens next.
Never use a blowtorch, propane heater, or any open flame on a pipe — fire risk, and it can damage the pipe and joints. Do not leave a space heater running unattended against a wall. Do not ignore a pipe just because water is flowing again elsewhere: a thawed section can start leaking hours later inside a wall.
If a pipe bursts: shut off the main water supply immediately, open faucets to drain the lines, move belongings away from the water, and call a plumber — this is the emergency case. Take photos of the damage as you find it for insurance, and mop up standing water as fast as you can to limit damage to flooring and drywall.
Central Texas freezes are short but sharp, and Kyle homes are not built like northern homes — pipes in exterior walls, attics, and garages are exposed. Before a forecast freeze:
The post-2021 Texas freeze lesson worth repeating: the homes that fared worst were the ones where nobody knew how to shut the water off. Learn your valve on a calm day.
Pipes are at risk when temperatures fall to around 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or below, especially pipes in unheated spaces like attics, garages, and exterior walls. In Kyle, short overnight freezes are the typical risk window, which is why dripping vulnerable faucets overnight works.
In most Kyle homes it is either near the water meter at the street (inside the meter box), or where the main line enters the house — often in the garage or on an exterior wall. Find it and test it before a freeze, not during one.
Yes. Ice expansion can split the pipe while it is frozen, but the leak only appears when the ice melts and full pressure returns. That is why you should watch a thawed pipe for leaks and know your shut-off location before you start warming it.
Call if you cannot find or reach the frozen section, if warming does not restore flow, if you suspect a pipe has split (or it starts leaking as it thaws), or if pipes freeze in the same place every winter — that spot needs insulation or rerouting, not another thaw.
